Heavy Duty Clutches
The standard Td5 clutches can be pretty good but for ultimate peace of mind we always recommend fitting a heavy duty Td5 clutch. The cost difference is negligable too so it’s a no-brainer really.
We are stockists for Clutchfix and LOF Clutches. We can also supply standard Valeo or Borg & Beck clutches if required.
All of the heavy duty clutches we sell are rated for a minimum of 450Nm which is well in excess of anything likely to be produced by a standard vehicle, or even many mapped Td5 vehicles.
If your Td5 is mapped we definitely recommend fitting a heavy duty Td5 clutch from either Clutchfix or LOF – it will add another layer of reliability. It also goes without saying that fitting a new DMF (dual mass flywheel) is a good idea. We see good quality (Valeo or similar) lasting 120-160k miles. Given the amount of work involved fitting one with the new upgraded clutch is a great idea.
The basic function of a Td5 clutch is to transmit engine power to the gear box, and allow the transmission to be interrupted while a gear is selected to move off from a stationary position. It is really important to select the right clutch as in most cases changing the clutch requires the gearbox and transfer box to be removed which is not a small job and if you are paying a garage not one you want to be paying for too many times – most garages will charge at least £400 upwards
