from £295+VAT

Twinwoods 4×4 offer market leading remapping services working closely with Alive Tuning – true professionals in Land Rover tuning.  Vehicles age differently and as such off-the-shelf maps are not always ideally suited. Our remaps are bespoke to you and your vehicle and can be customised depending on the vehicles application, for example a towing vehicle or a full time off roader.

As authorised Alive Tuning Dealers our customers have access to the best performance upgrades available.

Bespoke Land Rover Tuning

Factory fuel maps must cover a wide range of uses, emissions specifications and global territories.  A remap will offer substantial improvement within the safe limits of the vehicle.

Alive Tuning have been in the tuning business for many years, among the first for the TD5.  Working with Alive not only gives us access to the best and safest maps around, but also access to some of the products Alive have spent years testing and developing, such as VGT turbos, performance intercoolers, exhaust systems, suspension upgrades and other performance enhancements.  Alive Tuning are one of only a few Land Rover tuning companies with in-house dynamometer facilities meaning they can fully test their base maps.  And it’s not just any dyno – it’s a Maha MSR500 which is calibrated annually.  The level of detail and control put into their tuning is what sets them apart from the others.

Environmental Impact

We and Alive Tuning take the environmental aspect of Land Rover tuning very seriously.  As such we aim to produce excellent power gains with minimal or no smoke whilst being able to retain any emissions systems fitted to the vehicle.  Excessive smoke is not only bad for the environment it is also a waste of fuel and created unwanted excessive heat (EGT).

How does bespoke Land Rover tuning work?

To begin with speak to us about your requirements, every vehicle is different.  When you come in to us your vehicle will be given a visual inspection, diagnostics check and road test, including data logging, prior to any remapping work.  If you are in any doubt about the condition of the vehicle we can also offer an in-depth physical vehicle inspection at additional cost.  We keep a selection of known good sensors on the shelf for testing purposes.  We also carry these items in stock in our shop should you wish to replace anything while you are here.  Very rarely if we do not feel your vehicle is up to a remap then we will discuss this with you, although ultimately the choice will be yours.

It is also common for customers to find that the sluggishness of their vehicle, and subsequently their need for a remap, is in fact an existing problem with the vehicle itself.  We can usually identify any pre-existing problems during the inspection and data run.

Once we are happy we will then begin the remapping process.  We use the latest genuine equipment for greater reliability.  Once the new map is loaded, we will carry out some tests and go for a test drive with you*.  If you would like any changes, then these will be made until you are 100% happy.

When you leave you will have a smile on your face and a much more efficient and responsive vehicle.

For more information please contact us.

How much does it cost?

Land Rover tuning packages start at £295+VAT for a basic software only tuning session.  If you are looking for an update to your existing map then please contact us for a price.  We prefer to meet you and see you vehicle in advance of the tuning session so that we can fully understand your needs and talk you through the process and what may be required to achieve your goals.

If any additional parts are requested, such as sensors, then these will be charged as extras.  The cost of the remap includes 1 hours labour.

  • Discovery 2 & Defender Td5 ..... £295 + VAT
  • Defender Puma TDCI (2.4 & 2.2) ..... £395 + VAT

How long will it take?

For most vehicles it should take no longer than an hour or so but we do recommend allowing a few hours.

Please note that all visits to our workshop must be pre-booked.  All Land Rover tuning work is planned in advance.

What physical modifications do you need for Land Rover tuning?

There are limits to what can be done with software alone, some physical modifications will be required for additional additional power.  We will discuss this with your during our initial planning meeting.

As well as modifications it is important not to forget routine maintenance, and not just the engine.  Having a vehicle remapped will put additional stress on the drivetrain as well as the engine.  Check your bushes, UJ's, propshafts and differentials and make sure the whole drivetrain has fresh good quality oils.  Any existing weaknesses can soon make themselves known - taking the TD5 as an example these vehicles came out the factory with just 120bhp (Defender) and 136bhp (Discovery), depending on your fuel map and modifications you could be almost doubling these figures!  If you need any assistance in preparing your vehicle for a remap then speak to us and we can help.  All remaps are within the safe limits of a well maintained vehicle.

Think about your brakes before a remap!

What are the performance gains?

The actual gains will vary from vehicle to vehicle, however all the base maps have been fully tested both on the road and on a dynamometer (rolling road) and each map is adjusted to your requirements.

You may have heard different levels of maps being referred to as “stages”.  This relates to the physical modifications carried out, which then allows an approximate amount of power.  It is important not to get too hung up on stages – all remapping is bespoke and based on you and your vehicle.

Alive GTB Turbos - Td5

The Alive GTB550 VNT turbo, designed and tested by Alive made in the UK, is capable of a reliable and consistent 250bhp and 550Nm of torque.  If you are interested in this level of power then please speak to us!  A more sedate version, the GTB450 (torque around 450Nm) is also available, which we would recommend to the majority of customers.

The above gains don’t really tell the whole story, peak figures are just peak figures.  There are massive improvements in driveability by where in the rev range the torque is delivered, and maintained for longer in the rev range.  Sometimes the improvement in where the power is delivered is more noticeable than the peak figures.

Discovery 2 Td5 Automatic – unfortunately the standard ZF 4HP22 gearbox is quite weak and therefore we have to limit the torque in order to avoid damaging the box.  Even with a heavy duty rebuilt gearbox you are still very limited.  If you are looking for substantially more power then a third pedal is definitely required.

Where a heavy duty clutch is required we recommend a minimum torque rating of 500Nm.  We work with both Clutchfix and LOF Clutches who can both supply top quality clutches.

Effects on Insurance and Warranty

Any modifications to your vehicle should be notified to your insurance company, this includes tuning.

If your vehicle is under any kind of warranty then you should seek advice from the warranty company regarding engine remapping. Failure to do this may invalidate any warranty or insurance policy you have.

Modification or removal of any emissions control systems will invalidate your insurance and most likely result in an MOT fail.

Fuel Consumption

We have a lot of people ask if fuel consumption will go down with a remap.  The simple answer is probably not, and if fuel consumption is a major concern then a big heavy vehicle designed in the 1980's with a large engine is probably not the ideal choice of vehicle.

You cannot get more out of something without putting more in.  That is not to say fuel consumption will increase, just that remapping is not the answer to good fuel consumption.  How you drive affects this more than the map.

Things that do make a difference are the your driving style, the quality of fuel used, the condition of injectors and the fuel system in general, condition of the cylinder head / ability to cleanly burn the fuel injected.
