Most pre-Puma Defenders had separate drive flanges and half shafts on the rear, the same type of setup as the front. Over time the splines in the drive flanges wear and cause a clunking noise, and eventually a total loss of drive.
These rear drive shafts/half shafts are the one piece design fitted to the later Defenders which eliminate the common clunking in the rear drive flanges.
The kit fits all Defender rear axles with a Rover diff (24 spline) and is quick and easy to fit.
