What is the EKA code?
On the Discovery 2 if the key receiver in the roof or the key itself fails then the only way you can demobilise the vehicle is by entering the Emergency Key Access (EKA) code. Land Rover did not make this process simple so read these instructions fully.
Failure of the remote receiver is commonly due to water ingress. If water has damaged the receiver then the leak(s) should be dealt with and then replace YWY000080. Also water ingress can affect the body control unit (BCU) and the fusebox beneath the steering wheel, which contains the IDM (Intelligent Drive Module). If this is the case then you should visit a specialist for advice as irreparable damage may be caused to the new roof receiver.
Please read this whole page before attempting to enter your EKA code.
Where is the EKA code?
The EKA code is provided on the security card in with the hand book of your D2. If you do not have this card then you should contact your local Land Rover dealer who will be able to look it up for you assuming it has not been changed at some point. They don’t normally charge for this but you may need to visit them with proof of ownership before they release the code to you. Bear in mind that the main dealers have no interest in you or your old Discovery but they are the only ones who can help you.
Emergency Key Access (EKA) Code Format
The EKA code consists of four numbers. It is not necessarily a four-digit number as some of the numbers may be greater than 10. It may also include letters. Where letters are present A = 10, B = 11, C = 12 and so on.
As an example the code 2D145 would be:
2 …Â 13 …Â 14 …Â 5
Entering the EKA code
The process of entering the EKA code can be confusing to remember if it is the first time you are doing it. The numbers must be entered exactly and there are time limits involved. It is a good idea to make sure the battery is fully charged before starting if the vehicle has been standing a while, which often they are.
When entering the EKA code :
- You must have the correct key for the door handle lock and a working door actuator for this process to complete.
- Ensure each key movement is carried out with care and precision and turned to the full extent of its travel.
- After turning the key to either the lock or unlock positions, make sure it is FULLY returned to the centre (vertical) position
- An interval of 10 seconds or more between key turns, or the key being held in a locked or unlocked position for 5 seconds or more will cancel an entry attempt, in which case you must start again.
When you are ready to start follow these steps :
Using the key turn the drivers door lock to the UNLOCK position and HOLD this position for at least 5 seconds
An audible warning is then emitted to indicate that the body control unit is ready to accept the code. Return the key to the centre position. It is now possible to use the key to enter the separate numerical values of the four digits that make up the EKA code.
Enter the first digit of the code. If the first digit is 4, turn the key to the UNLOCK position 4 times.
Ensure the key is fully returned to the centre position after each turn of the key.
Enter the second digit of the code. If the second digit is 3, turn the key to the LOCK position 3 times.
Ensure the key is fully returned to the centre position after each turn of the key.
Enter the third digit of the code. If the third digit is 2, turn the key to the UNLOCK position twice.
Ensure the key is fully returned to the centre position after each turn of the key.
Enter the fourth digit of the code. If the fourth digit is 1, turn the key to the LOCK position once.
Ensure the key is fully returned to the centre position after each turn of the key.
Finally, turn the key to the UNLOCK position and back to the centre position, a double bleep will indicate that the code has been entered correctly. A single bleep indicates that the code has been entered incorrectly.
Then before opening the door wait 5 minutes for the alarm and immobiliser to be de-activated (a timer is very handy). During the 5 minute wait for the alarm and immobiliser to be de-activated the alarm indicator LED in the instrument pack continues to flash (one flash every 2 seconds). DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR OR ATTEMPT TO ENTER THE CAR until the full delay period has elapsed.
Â
When the 5 minute wait has elapsed the alarm indicator LED stops flashing. Immediately open the door, insert the key in the ignition switch and turn the switch to position II. If the ignition switch is not turned to position II within 30 seconds of the end of the 5 minute wait, the engine is automatically immobilised again and the process will need to be restarted.
The EKA code will not be recognised if there is an interval of 10 seconds or more between key turns or if the key is held turned for 5 seconds or more during the procedure.
In some system configurations a successful EKA code entry is indicated by the audible warning device pulsing twice for a period of 50 ms on, 200 ms off. The theft deterrent LED is switched on for 1 second, all doors unlock, the alarm disarms and the vehicle is remobilised allowing the engine to start.
If the Mislock audible warning has been disabled (by a Land Rover dealer or specialist) then the alarm sounder will not sound when an EKA code has been entered. Instead, the alarm indicator light on the instrument panel will flash once (for one second) to indicate a successful code entry.
If an incorrect code is entered, an audible warning is emitted and the procedure must be repeated. Up to a maximum of 3 attempts to enter the code is possible. After three attempts the BCU will not allow any further codes to be entered for a period of at least 10 minutes.
